The SAVES program was started in 1983 to offer assistance to individuals and families who are experiencing a temporary emergency situation. To qualify a person must be experiencing circumstances that fall within federal program guidelines. These circumstances might include: recent job loss, awaiting approval of benefits and benefits exhausted or cut off. The SAVES program provides a large assortment of food items to qualified persons: fresh and canned fruits and vegetables; chili and soup; breads and bakery goods; beverages; dry milk; and staples such as rice, beans and dried cereals. SAVES also provides special assistance (as available, seasonally) with back to school supplies, holiday food baskets and utility assistance.
