California Legislature set to begin 2017-2018 session

On December 5, 2016, California will begin its two-year legislative session. Following the November election, new members will be sworn into office — and the work will begin for the two years ahead. Many new faces will be joining returning members of the Legislature this year. In the Child Care Resource Center’s service area, three of our nine state senators are new to their seats. In the Child Care Resource Center’s California Assembly delegation, five of our fourteen representatives are new to their districts.

As in every year, the Legislature will begin their bulk of their work after the first of the year. Each member will introduce a package of legislative proposals, which will undoubtedly include issues important to California children and families. In addition, Governor Brown will release his proposed budget for fiscal year 2017/18 and the Budget Committees will consider his proposal and develop their plans throughout the spring.

Now is a great time to get to know your members of the Legislature. Members of both the Senate and Assembly spend time in their district offices, and it is important to get to know them and members of their team. Invite them to visit your programs, share your family stories and include them in community events.
