Every year, thousands of Early Care and Education (ECE) professionals apply themselves to learning by participating in training provided by Child Care Resource and Referral (R&R) and Alternative Payment (AP) agencies.

In 2010, Los Angeles County Resource and Referral agencies launched the Gateways for Early Educators Passport program to track training completed by participating ECE professionals. The main goal of Gateways is to provide ECE professionals with the training and professional development knowledge and skills needed to provide high-quality learning experiences for the young children in their care.

This year marks the 7th anniversary for the Karen Kay Achievement Award. This award honors the memory of Karen Kaye, whose vision paved the way for the development of the Gateways for Early Educators initiative. Karen Kaye was the Executive Director at Connections for Children, a R&R agency that serves the Westside and South Bay of Los Angeles.

To date, the training achievements of over 4,200 ECE professionals have been acknowledged through the Gateways for Early Educators program.
