Thousands of children and families are tragically affected by non-traffic-related incidents with vehicles every year. In May 2014, seven children died in hot cars during a 16-day period in four states. All but one was left by a family member.
That’s one of many reasons why you should never leave a child ALONE in or near a car.
Most people do not realize that a vehicle can heat up very quickly. Even if the window is cracked two inches and the outside temperature is in the low 80’s, it only takes A MATTER OF MINUTESTM for the temperature inside the car to reach deadly levels. According to research done by the Stanford University School of Medicine, children have died in cars on 70-degree days.
By always supervising children in and around cars, you’ll help keep them safe from heatstroke, carbon monoxide poisoning, backover, abduction…and even death.
Please remember:
- Never leave children unattended in or near a car.
- If you see a child locked inside a car — CALL 911!
- Teach children not to play in or near a car, even in driveways or parking lots.
- Keep cars locked and keys away from children.
- Check cars and their trunks immediately if a child is missing.
- Check that all small passengers have left the car once it’s parked.
