Recently CCRC partnered with the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) to host a Literacy Fair for CCRC families in the San Fernando Valley! With the assistance of IICF staff and partner volunteers, as well as a special appearance by Walkaround Cookie Monster from Sesame Street, this event brought a lot of smiles to the little ones and the adults in attendanceas we celebrate 10 Years of literacy and collecting 1 million books!
During the event we had multiple education and literacy activities that the children and families were able to enjoy and take home. This fun filled day included: create your own book and bookmark, coloring arts and crafts, Vroom cup stacking, and each child received two books and an awesome backpack! Refreshments for the day were provided by JetBlue, an agency also committed to improving the access and resources to books. This event would not have been possible without the volunteers from IICF and their partners.
“Literacy is an essential building block for success in school and life. IICF is so proud to partner with CCRC to bring the fun of literacy to our local community. From crafts, to stories, to a favorite Sesame Street friend, it was wonderful to bring together the community around the morning’s literacy-themed activities,” stated Melissa-Anne Duncan, IICF’s Western Division Executive Director.
Previous to the event, IICF also donated 10,000 copies of Sesame Workshop’s Book Buddies, a bilingual children’s book. Access to books and resources particularly for low-income families has a drastic impact on a child’s education and overall well-being. With the help from IICF, CCRC has been able to meet their goal of collecting one million books for the 10-year anniversary of CCRC’s What a DIFFERENCE a Book Makes campaign.
The IICF is a unique non-profit that unities the collective strengths of the insurance industry to help communities and enrich lives through grants, volunteer service and leadership. They continuously reinvest locally and actively look for organizations with similar missions. They have a companywide initiative, Every Day is a Reading and Writing Day, that reinforces the importance of reading and writing every day for both children and adults. The literacy campaigns that each of our organizations are committed to strengthen this partnership. We are delighted and thankful to be a part of the success that we are collectively able to share with our surrounding communities through literacy.
