Preparedness and Response Readiness: Providers
the R&R agencies in seven of the eight survey areas: (1) Laws and requirements for emergency preparedness in child care, (2) How to be prepared for an emergency while children are in your care,
(3) How to respond during an emergency while children are in your care, (4) What to do after an emergency when children are in your care, (5) Reuniting children with parents after an emergency, (6) Available resources in the community for preparing for an emergency, and (7) Available resources in the community for responding during an emergency. In contrast, the percent of FCC providers indicating that they had received information regarding the eight areas was greater than 80% for all categories except for Available resources in the community for preparing for an emergency and Available resources in the community for responding during an emergency.
As illustrated in Table 10, the percentages of center-based and FCC early care and education providers who have had trainings or who have emergency plans and procedures in place are 80% or above in all areas queried, except for one: In one group of center-based providers, 75% reported that they have A plan to reunite children with parents or guardians after an emergency.
These findings are not surprising given the discussion that occurred in the focus groups around the topic of the expectations that providers have for receiving emergency preparedness information and support from the R&R agencies. In the focus group discussions, FCC providers were more likely to have these expectations than center-based providers. Therefore, it is not surprising that greater percentages of FCC providers report having received emergency preparedness information from the R&R agencies in the survey. However, given the high percentages of center-based providers who are also engaging in emergency preparedness trainings and procedure development, it is possible that they have additional sources of information, whereas the FCC providers may be relying on the R&R agencies as a main source of emergency preparedness and response information.
