Establishing a Foundation for Emergency Preparedness with the Los Angeles County R&R Agencies
During June 2013 LACDPH provided funding for Save the Children31 to conduct three working sessions with the R&R agencies in Los Angeles County. The first meeting was focused on Preparedness, the second on Response, and the third on Recovery from emergencies.
The mission of Save the Children is to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives. Their vision is a world in which every child attains the right to survival, protection, development, and participation. According to their website, “Save the Children is there to save lives with food, medical care and education and remains to help communities rebuild through long-term recovery programs. As quickly and as effectively as Save the Children responds to tsunamis and civil conflict, it works to resolve the ongoing struggles children face every day—poverty, hunger, illiteracy and disease—and replaces them with hope for the future.”

Areas of greatest knowledge growth due to the training include the following:

providers and emergency responders during an emergency
 How R&Rs can support the connection and communication between providers and parents during an emergency
 What to do after assessing the impact of an emergency
 How to use a questionnaire/assessment (such as Save the Children’s Child Care Initial Rapid Damage Assessment) to determine the needs of the child care programs in your community after an emergency
 How to handle material donations after an emergency h This area of knowledge grew between session 1 and session 2.
