Experience. To better understand the coaching participants their level of experience in the field of ECE will also be reported. Prior research has shown that the field is fraught with turnover.xl The 2006 Study of Family Child Care showed that the average years of experience was 8.9 years.xli Local data on center-based programs measure experience in terms of tenure at a particular location and therefore it doesn’t map on to our “experience” data as well as the family child care data.xlii If this is the case then it wouldn’t pay to invest in professional development for a group who will soon leave the industry. However, the NSECE has found the amount of experience in center-based and home-based caregivers to be much higher than previously reported.xliii This study found that the median years of ECE experience for center- based caregivers was 10 years and for family child care providers was 13.7 years. The median level of experience for license-exempt providers was 5 years.
