   Gateways for Early Educators
2016
   Demographic Reach
As indicated in Table 19, since 2011, the Gateways program has trained 10,466 early childhood educators and has provided coaching in professional development and quality improvement to 2,251 early childhood educators. The 2011-2012 program year represents the first program year during which Gateways received funding through First 5 LA and LAUP as part of the Los Angeles Early Care and Education Workforce Consortium and was not a full year of implementation. Hence, during that program year, a smaller number of early childhood educators were coached and trained as the program ramped up. From year to year, the program became consistent in serving a diverse population of early childhood educators across Los Angeles County, inclusive of all ECE sectors. Participants served have been comprised of licensed family child care owners (45.6%) and staff (9.1%), center-based teachers (26.6%), program administrators (3.2%), staff who provide support for a program with direct care for children (1.9%), staff who provide support for the field of ECE (0.8%), students (5.2%) and license-exempt providers (6.8%). With the exception of the first year, during which a greater percent of early childhood educators served were family child care owners (61.6%) the breakdown of providers served by ECE involvement has been pretty consistent across the years. From year to year, the largest group of early childhood educators served through Gateways has had some college (38.5%), no permit (63.3%), on average 12.1 years working in the field of ECE and had 8.4 years working in their current position. As demonstrated in Table 20, the largest groups of Gateways participants have been Hispanic / Latino (63.5%), English- (47.3%) or Spanish-speaking (45.2%) and predominately female (96.4%). Similar demographic trends were present across all 5 program years.

“I learned how to interact better with children and their families, such as with children with special needs. I also discovered many useful resources to help me such as the food programs, how to network with other child care providers.” ~ Gateways Coaching Participant
