Message from the CEO
Hello Friends,
Countless research studies confirm what we have known for a long time – the first five years of a child’s life have a lasting impact on lifelong learning, health, and success. We also know that a focus on the child is not always enough, and that children thrive when their parents have the resources they need to support healthy development.
And yet, about one in five of all California children ages five and younger live in poverty, and nearly half of the state’s children live in households that are at or near the poverty level. In Los Angeles County and across the state, income disparities and early childhood education gaps persist (First 5 LA, A Take on Equity). If you believe – like we do at CCRC – that children and families are the best investment for the future, these statistics speak to the urgent need for investment in young children and their families.
Thankfully, the public is responding to the call. We are in a period of increased public awareness and commitment to invest in early childhood. And that’s good for all of us. In our 2019-2024 Strategic Plan, we are committed to lasting and impactful change. We will continue to invest in quality early childhood options and work to advance policies that are responsive to the needs and priorities of the communities we serve.
