low number of Adult-Child Interaction goals. This area is important given the role it plays in most QRIS programs and in child outcomes. In addition, many of the recent Child Care Licensing violations have been in the area of Adult-Child Interactions.
Compared to the last two years, a greater percentage of quality improvement plans were developed focusing on Adult-Child Interactions (18.8% this year compared to 9.8% and 6.2% the prior 2 years) and less on Learning Environments (72.4% compared to 78.7% last year and 74.1% the prior year) and on Special Needs and Inclusion (8.9% compared to 11.4% and 19.7% in the prior 2 years). When considering the changes in goal development by individual R&R agency, there does appear to be a shift in creating more quality improvement plans centered around Adult-Child Interactions. There was an increase in Adult-Child Interaction goals created within all agencies ranging from a 1.8% increase to a 15.3% increase. The agency which had the lowest percent of Adult-Interaction goals in 2014-2015 had an increase from 1.3% of goals in this area to 8.6% this year. Anecdotal information gleaned from discussions with coaches and ECE professionals also suggest that while the goals that coaches and participants created may not be explicitly centered on Adult-Child interactions, the theme of adult-child interaction and its potential to impact children is embedded within many goals participants have been working on with coaches.
