 Research Question 5: What are the successes and challenges experienced by participants and coaches?
Multiple methods were employed to obtain feedback regarding the successes and challenges of participants in the program. The annual Coaching Experience Survey of core participants asked coaching participants about their experience in the Gateways program, including the successes and challenges they faced with the program. In addition, focus groups were conducted with coaching participants between October 2015 and February 2016 to gain a more in depth understanding of the participant experience in and impact of the program. Furthermore, information about the challenges coaches and administrators faced were collected during a convening of coaches and administrators. Finally, the Research Manager attended monthly meetings with the Coaches and documented challenges and successes throughout the year. See Appendix C for an executive summary and focus group protocol.
When describing successes in the Gateways Program in the Coaching Experience Survey, participants described impacts to their professional development, increase in quality improvement in their programs, and having experienced a positive experience in the coaching program. See Table 12 for a summary. As seen in the next section of the report, many of the successes described by the participants through the Coaching Experience Survey mirror those described through focus group participation.
