Discipline is a concept that helps children develop the skills needed to manage their emotions, follow directions, and regulate their behavior.
When setting your discipline guidelines always take into account a child’s developmental level. Sometimes, we as adults expect beyond a child’s ability.

DISCIPLINE GUIDELINES IN YOUR CHILD CARE SETTING
Difference between Punishment and Discipline: Punishment tells
the child he/she did something bad and wrong; it doesn’t always make sense to a child. Discipline teaches the child how to act and explains why his action is wrong, giving him/her a chance to correct their mistake.
Setting Limits: It is normal for children to misbehave because they are adventurous, have strong impulses and need to experience things for themselves. This will cause some challenges for you but staying consistent is the key when setting new limits. Keep in mind the strengths and weaknesses of individual children, their age, and social skills to determine how you can support them.
Notice when behavior is acceptable and not just when it’s wrong:
Children need attention. When they don’t get attention they
will misbehave, even if it’s negative attention. It is important to make conscious decisions to acknowledge acceptable behavior and praise children for it. When giving praise, be clear on why you are praising them. Instead of saying, “Great job!” say, “Great job cleaning up the toys when I asked you to”.
Set an example: As the adult you are a role model to children. They hear the way you speak to other adults and children and see how you cope with frustration. With that being said, it is important that you show children the same behavior you expect out of them.
Remember you should never lose your temper and yell or spank children. It is important to show respect to children of all ages. We also encourage you to communicate with the child’s guardian at all times.
