 Activities
  Handmade puppets
This craft is a great way to use creativity to help kids develop their conversation skills. Children can adorn their puppet
in bows, long or short hair, bow ties and buttons for a personalized character that they can use to interact with the puppets made by other children in the group.
Supplies: a sock or paper bag, markers, buttons, yarn, glue and scissors (adults should use the scissors)
• Instruct the children to be creative with designing their puppet by adding hair and drawing a face.
• Engage the child by asking about the puppet’s personality: What’s your puppet’s name? What does he/she like to do? Why does your puppet have green hair?
• Once the children are finished making their puppets, initiate a puppet show. Ask the children to use their puppets to act out a scene. This activity is a great way to help shy kids open up.
Sidewalk Chalk Art
During the summer months, children can benefit from playing outdoors. This fun craft allows kids to be creative while getting some fresh air.
You can use store-bought chalk or make your own using this recipe by FunCheapOrFree.com.
Ingredients: Squeeze bottles or cups, small foam brushes, 1 cup corn starch, 1 cup water and food coloring.
Steps:
1. Mix the cornstarch and water together in a bowl until it’s blended
2. Divide the combination across the different jars, bottles or cups
3. Add about five drops of different colored food coloring to each jar and mix (more drops can make the color brighter)
4. Instruct the children to use a foam brush or the squeeze bottle to design their masterpiece on the sidewalk
This homemade sidewalk paint doesn’t store well, so make sure you use it all up the same day you make it.
