Motheread – Family Literacy Series
In this eight part series, families learn simple strategies to teach their child how to interpret stories and enhance their vocabulary. Utilizing children’s books, 350 children across San Bernardino enhanced their literacy skills with an emphasis on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. 70 Parents completed the program and were awarded a certificate, along with copies of all of the books featured in the series. To continue their literacy journey, story extenders are also made available to families.
It works! “When she first entered into the program Holleigh was shy and not comfortable to speak in front of the other children. As time progressed in the sessions of the Motheread program Holleigh had the confidences to engage with the other children and was more verbal with everyone around her. Even Holleigh’s teacher made a comment that she has noticed a wonderful transformation in her.”
  Child Care Initiative Project (CCIP)
This community-based network offers assistance with the licensing process and one-on-one support that enhances the quality of child care as well as information regarding child care environment improvement grants. Participants in the program can attend regular trainings in quality early learning and business practices and receive quality assessments and family engagement activities to help build a supportive relationship between providers and their families. We would like to congratulate the newly licensed providers that participated in our program and are beginning their professional career in early childhood education.
Workforce Development
Similar to the CCIP program, the Family Friend & Neighbor project outreaches to licensed exempt providers and helps them navigate the licensing process with an individualized action plan. Services include presentations on health and safety practices, Title 22, and access to free CCIP trainings. Of the 98 program participants, 11 received their child care license. The Long Distance Learning project is a coaching program designed to improve professional development opportunities for licensed exempt providers while enhancing their work with children. Providers received a WIFI enabled tablet computer for weekly Skype coaching sessions and online resources for additional training opportunities. The eight providers in the program developed their own individual goals and participated in 150 hours of coaching.
