Overview
Head Start is a federally-funded high quality child and family
development program that promotes the school readiness
of low-income children 0-5 years of age and pregnant mothers.
The program takes a holistic approach to education and family
engagement by providing children and their families with health
(medical, dental, nutrition, and mental), disability, education,
and social services based on individualized needs assessments.
Parents participate in the classroom as volunteers and have the
opportunity to be part of the Parent Council, which helps guide program planning, policies and reporting.
Educators, child care providers, and health care providers help communities partner with parents to do a better job of preparing children for a stronger start in life through personal visits, group connections, screenings, and network of resources.
Learning priorities include: ▶ Language
▶ Literacy ▶ Math
▶ Science
▶ Social and emotional functioning ▶ Creative arts
