 Early Childhood Professional Development
2018-2019 Highlights
San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, Ted Alejandre, on the impact of QSSB
We’ve never had a coordinated effort to work together and build the expertise and skills of those
in our early childhood education programs. If we can [create] a strong program for early childhood education, focusing on 0-5,
then our students are going to
be prepared for TK (transitional kindergarten) and K (kindergarten).

The Family Child Care Home Education Network (FCCHEN) Professional Development (PD) Coaches increased the use of technology to help providers track child assessments. In a successful test pilot for online trainings, providers completed 282 hours
of professional development on topics such as health & safety, child development, and early care and education leadership. Parents were asked to rate how satisfied they were with various characteristics of their child’s program and 89% responded that they were Very Satisfied how the program promotes their child’s learning and developing.

Every year, we offer a wide range of trainings designed to inform and support child care providers. This year, topics included:
•The Impact of Domestic Violence & Trauma of the Developing Brain
•Preventative Health & Safety •Child Care Community Licensing •Early Warning Signs for Learning
Difficulties
•Bullying Prevention Early in
Childhood
•Building a Healthy Brain •Emergency Preparedness
Coaches began utilizing the Learning Genie Database application for DRDP child assessment tracking in collaboration with child care providers entering observations to complete child assessments.
30% of providers used Learning Genie to capture children’s activities and observations.
Working with the providers on using the Learning Genie has been a time saver, they were hesitant to use it because of the technology but after several trainings and one on ones they got a hang of it.
